Wheelchairs in Yola Nigeria

A team of Rotarians, that included three members of the PSA board visited Yola, Nigeria in November 2017. The group traveled to help with polio immunizations in the area. They also gathered with local leaders and Rotarians to distribute more than 100 tricycle wheelchairs to polio survivors. The wheelchairs were provided through the generous contributions raised by team members prior to the trip. The gift of a US$150 tricycle wheelchair makes a significant change in the life of a polio survivor, providing mobility and restoring their dignity. You really want to go but … The event, organised by Polio Australia, was the 2016 Australasian-Pacific Post-Polio Conference with guest speakers, polio experts, coming from around the world. Chatting on Facebook, an American polio friend asked if I was going explaining she couldn’t manage the trip physically. I described my financial and physical limitations and she offered to fund me to attend, knowing I would share any worthwhile information widely. How could I resist? Three days in Sydney, rooming with a young Vietnamese-born

Poliovirus Receptor (CD155) Expression in Pediatric Brain Tumors Mediates Oncolysis of Medulloblastoma and Pleomorphic Xanthoastrocytoma

Poliovirus oncolytic immunotherapy is a putatively novel approach to treat pediatric brain tumors. This work sought to determine expression of the poliovirus receptor (PVR), CD155, in low-grade and malignant pediatric brain tumors and its ability to infect, propagate, and inhibit cell proliferation. CD155 expression in pleomorphic xanthoastrocytoma (PXA), medulloblastoma, atypical teratoid rhabdoid tumor, primitive neuroectodermal tumor, and anaplastic ependymoma specimens was assessed. The ability of the polio: rhinovirus recombinant, PVSRIPO, to infect PXA (645 [BRAF V600E mutation], 2363) and medulloblastoma (D283, D341) cells were determined by viral propagation measurement and cell proliferation. PVR mRNA expression was evaluated in 763 medulloblastoma and

Community-Based Rehabilitation

In a global sense, Community-Based Rehabilitation (CBR) is the primary means by which disabled people in most countries of the world have any access to rehabilitation or disability services. The primary purpose is to ensure people with disabilities realize their rights and responsibilities and have the opportunity of leading lives with dignity.   A doctor examines a young polio survivor prior to surgery. Surgery will help straighten the leg, and it will then be immobilized in a cast for 6 to 8 weeks afterwards. A CBR would not only ensure that he will get help to stand, but will
