Dr.Halstead is one of the early doctors to identify what came to be known as “post-polio syndrome” (PPS).  He helped organize international conferences in Warm Springs in the early 1980’s and has continued his interest and work at the National Rehabilitation Hospital.  Joan Headley, Senior Advisor to our Polio Survivors Action Group is one of the Contributors appearing in the book.  This book has the same essay chapter characteristics as the earlier work by Doctors Silver and Gawne, “Postpolio Syndrome”, but differs in focus from the medical practitioner to the individual survivor.  It is easy to identify oneself in some of the personal stories of survivors.  The book is enlightening, easy to read and understand.  It is especially useful to those of us undergoing the aging process only to find a new unwelcome companion, postpolio syndrome, and a disability we had denied or disavowed years before.
